This Summer's Ultimate Single-Handed Sailing Challenge
This new take on the RYC’s popular Gulf Alone Series promises even more challenge, excitement and camaraderie over the coming season. This year’s new series sponsor, Sail IQ, is a fledgling sail specialty loft. Andrew, the director of Sail IQ, will be known to many of you as the skipper of the Elliot 8.5, UNITEC 2.
This year’s series has been extended to nine races to add greater challenge for competitors and to give them the opportunity to get together at various venues. Races are a mix of day and overnight events and include shorter harbour courses and the longer and more challenging Night Race to Kawau, an Auckland Icon, and Route 1 the longest coastal single handed race in New Zealand. Auckland to Whangarei.
Linking singlehanded races from four Auckland yacht clubs the 2015-16 series will consist of nine races beginning on 10th October 2015, with a fleet race weekend, stopping overnight at Gulf Harbour Marina. The last race of the series will be the Devonport Yacht Club’s single handed race around Rangitoto Island.
This year a no-extras division has been added to encourage even more sailors into this unique form of yacht racing. We know the the hardy single handers of 2013 & 2014 will be back and joined we hope by the growing group of sailors who enjoy this form of our sport.
